Overview
On this 5 days’ tour, trek the world’s most beautiful and endangered ape species – the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park and hike to the peak of world’s largest lava lake -Mountain Nyiragongo in western Democratic Republic of Congo. This trip will commence and end in Kigali - the capital of Rwanda.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Kigali city to Volcanoes National Park
Have an early pick up from your hotel by a guide from the company and head out on a city tour around Kigali - the capital of Rwanda. Visit the genocide museum a place that holds much history of the 1994 genocide that led to the death of over 1000,000 people in Rwanda.
Have another stop over at the presidential palace that was home to the former president of Rwanda whose death sparked off the 1994 genocide. After have lunch in Kigali and proceed to musanze province where volcanoes national park is located. Arrive at the park, check in the lodge, relax and chill as you wait for a delicious dinner and sleepover.
Day 2:Volcanoes National Park- Gorilla trekking
Rise up early for breakfast as you prepare for an ultimate gorilla experience in the jungle, hike to the park’s headquarters for briefing by the park’s warden about one’s conduct while trekking the gentle apes.
After head out for a trek ofa dedicated gorilla family on the foothills of Virunga massif, you will spend one hour interacting and getting to know more about the livelihood of mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National park.
This activity takes about 2 to 6 hours thus will require packed lunch from the lodge. After return to the lodge and wait for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Dian Fossey visit and Lake Kivu leisure tour
After a warm cup of coffee, hike to the grave of the historical Dian fossey, she was primatologist and naturalist who dedicated her life to study, conserve and protect the endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga region.
Have lunch and check out of the lodge, proceed on a road transfer to Lake Kivu. This the largest fresh water body in Rwanda, located on the western border of Rwanda neighboring the Democratic Republic of Congo. Have a relaxing cruise on the lake with the scenic view from its surrounding.
Later in the evening you will have another road transfer to Virunga national park, where you will have a sleep over and dinner.
Day 4: Ascend Mount Nyiragongo
On this morning get ready for an adventurous hike to the world’s largest lava lake. After your delicious breakfast start the hike and proceed for a strenuous but rewarding hike to the summit of this active volcano of Mount Nyiragongo.
Have a rewarding view of the lava caldera as well as the entire Virunga national park. Your night will be spent at the summit cabins with supper prepared by an onsite cook.
Day 5: Descend to the bottom of Mount Nyiragongo and return to Kigali city.
Have a warm cup of tea as you prepare for a slope down to the bottom of the mountain. Upon arrival at the starting point you will drive back to Kigali in Rwanda for departure to your next destination.
