Overview
4 days gorilla and golden monkey safari happens in Mgahinga National in Uganda’s most southern district of Kisoro, about 495 kilometers taking 8 hours’ drive from the capital, Kampala. Mgahinga National Park is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda but it is home to some of the Virunga Mountains bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo i.e. Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhabura.
Visiting this park brings you closer to the unique endangered mountain gorillas since it harbors half the population of these world renowned primates. It not only harbors mountain gorillas but also a great deal of the magnificent golden monkeys thus deriving its slogan –“Where Gold meets silver”.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Road Transfer to Mgahinga National Park
Wake up early in the morning, have breakfast, and then proceed with your guide on a Road transfer to Mgahinga National Park via Masaka-Mbarara Road to Kisoro district.
Mgahinga National Park is the tiniestof all parks in Uganda but very unique, it was established in 1991 with the purpose of protecting the then endangered mountain gorillas; the park derives its name Mgahinga from one of the Virunga Mountains Mount. Gahinga that is encompassed within the Park. Mgahinga National park is bordered by Rwanda to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.
Upon reaching the park in the evening, you will check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking
Following an early morning breakfast with your packed lunch, water and some snacks, have a road transfer to/from Bwindi forest for gorilla trekking, the trek starts from the park headquarters for a briefing about the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park, then after hike into the forest in search for these endangered primates.
Mountain gorillas are scientifically believed to possess up to 99% human DNA and in their ways of style, the way they feed their young ones and how they conduct their day to day activities proves that they are really human-like. Trekking activity lasts for 2-8 hours or even less, because it’s typically dependent on the location of these primates.
As soon as you reach them, you will be required to spend only one hour with them and you are advised to keep a 7-meter distance from these primates.
After the activity, retire to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking
Following your morning breakfast, you will have a road transfer to the park headquarters for briefing just like gorilla trekking. The park ranger will brief you on the do’s and don’ts during golden monkey trekking and what to expect in the trek. You will as well be divided into groups of 8 people. Hike into the bamboo forest in search for these jumpy and stubborn primates who always feed on the bamboo shoots and other foods like fruits and roots.
You will be required to spend one hour with these golden monkeys, thereafter you will descend back to the park headquarters for a road transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay as you prepare for departure the following day.
Day 4: Departure Via the Equator
Wakeup early in the morning, have your breakfast and have a road transfer back to Kampala via hills of Kisoro as you explore the gifted pearl of Africa in western region. Have an enroute stop at the equator for memorable photographs and get yourself some souvenirs that are sold around the equator.
After this geographical experience, you will proceed on a road drive to Entebbe international Airport for your departure.
