Overview
What an opportunity to celebrate a memorable one – on – one experience with the majestic eastern lowland gorillas in lush jungles of eastern D.R. Congo. These special kind of gorillas are only found in Kahuzi-Biega national park, also Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega.
Tracking lowland gorillas is an amazing moment just like mountain gorillas; watch them cuddle, jump between trees and see the giant alpha males offer protection to the rest of family members.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Kigali – Kahuzi-Biega national park (Bukavu)
pick up by our company driver guide during morning hours. Depending on your arrival time, have breakfast and a short tour to the craft market in Kigali to buy anything you might have forgotten. Begin the drive thereafter south-west wards to D.R. Congo.
Kahuzi – Biega national park is your destination for this trip; it is located in eastern D.R. Congo near the border with Rwanda.
Your journey will traverse through the scenic sites in the country side, through Butare city and Nyanza historical town where you will stop for lunch and cultural tour in the afternoon to attend Intore dance, a traditional entertainment at king’s palace.
Continue to Bukavu town through Changugu boarder and have a night over as you wait for the following day’s magical gorilla trekking experience.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking and community walks / waterfalls tour
Leave Bukavu town to begin a 6-7 hours’ gorilla tracking experience through lush jungles of Kahuzi-Biega national park. This is a memorable moment and a highlight of this 3 days’ tour. Make it enjoyable! After briefing you will be assigned a ranger guide to escort you to the interior of this thick forest to meet a gorilla family assigned to you.
An eventual gorilla encounter will last for only 1 hour where visitors can ask questions, watch these huge giants interact with each other in a natural environment. Not like their counterparts the mountain gorillas, lowland gorillas live in bigger families of up to 30 members and they are bigger in size with brownish /golden hair on their upper body.
Have your packed lunch and continue on a community tour before returning to the hotel in Bukavu town. Drive to the Tshibati waterfalls, research center, Mbayo tea plantations or just visit the neighboring homes to learn about their ways of life and get entertained.
Day 3: Return to Kenya, Departure
Have a tasty cup of coffee early morning as you plan to depart Bukavu town. Pass via Butare – Nyanza highway and arrive in the city early enough for a short city tour before departure.
