Overview
How amazing it is to spot and learn of the physical appearance, sound, and unique attributes of two special gorilla species in the world, found in only the continent of Africa! Get yourself this special six-day double Gorilla trekking in two of Congo’s top travel destinations; Virunga national park for mountain Gorilla trekking, and Kahuzi Biega national park for Lowland Gorilla trekking.
The activities and fun start from day one to day last. With each passing day bringing forth a new surprise, we put together a collection of quality lodges, expert guides, comfortable transportation and remarkable activities, inclusive of city tours, nature walks, hiking and water-related activities. It all starts and ends at Kigali airport.
Details
Day 1: Pickup
Your first day will be for arrival and transfer to the lodge in or around the game park, though we decide to flavor it with a few brief yet very remarkable activities around Kigali city if time allows. Part of the attractions you expect to visit are the local markets to purchase a few missing things; the Genocide memorial to learn and pay tribute to over 250,000 innocent people who lost their lives in the 1994 Rwanda ethnic conflict between the Tutsi and Hutu factions.
The drive from Kigali, Rwanda to Virunga national park lasts for approximately 5-6 hours, via a route marked by rolling hills, scattered homesteads and plenty of flora. There will register at the border post, and have Lunch, before proceeding to the lodge for dinner and a nap
Day 2: Virunga national park; Mountain gorilla trekking
Just after a tasty cup of coffee at the lodge, so will you depart the lodge very early in the morning to the park headquarters for an ultimate gorilla trekking adventure. It starts at about 8:30 am with registration and briefing, before traversing the different corners of the jungle, right from where they were seen the previous day.
The exercise can last for approximately 1-8 hours depending on your tracking speed and the distance moved bythe apes, plus one more hour to take photos, ask questions and watch the dominant silverbacks, the youngsters play and the mothers breastfeed their infants. Mountain gorillas have over 95% human genes and spend most of their time on treetops and base feeding on leaves, and stems.
After encountering your relatives and several other residents in the Jungle, you will return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a relaxed evening. Optionally, you can also decide to engage in any other activity such as a city tour or cultural adventure instead of relaxing.
Day 3: Guided nature walk and transfer to Kahuzi Biega national park in the south of Lake Kivu
On this day, you will have a relaxed breakfast meal, followed by a rewarding 2-3 hour guided nature walk; an opportunity to draw closer to nature, learn more about botany, glace at the captivating Virunga ranges, and enjoy the photo moments.
Afterwards, your will return and checkout of the Lodge for a 4-5 hours’ drive to the home o the rare lowland gorillas; Kahuzi-Biega national park, with lunch enroute. Check-in to the lodge upon arriving in the afternoon, as you wait for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Kahuzi Biega national park; Lowland gorilla trekking and Village walk
As early as 6:00 am, you should be set for breakfast, followed by a transfer to the park headquarters for document verification and briefing. This is done by the park rangers who will explain the dos and don'ts of tracking, assign members to respective gorilla families of their choice and they give offer accompaniment into the Jungle, through the bushes, hills, and valley, yet encountering several other primates, birds, and mammals living here.
It can take 1-8 hours to register success and one more hour to enjoy the fruits of your hard work through photos and sighting the unique characteristics of the family. There are 3 habituated gorilla families open for trekking here and they spend most of their time on the ground.
After the adventure, you will return to the lodge for lunch and then spend the evening exploring the ways of the locals residing in the neighborhood. They will entertain you with their various cultural performances before your return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer to Lake Kivu
After a yummy breakfast meal, you will check out of the lodge and drive to the Lake Kivu; Rwanda's largest freshwater lake for lunch, and relaxation. Activities to engage in an include horse ride, swimming, sunbathing, nature walk and canoeing among others.
The place is surrounded by breathtaking islands, a cool breeze and rolling hills. Dinner and a nap sum up the day.
Day 6: Departure-City tour
Depending on the time of your flight, you will enjoy your breakfast and then check out of the lodge for a transfer to the airport. Our expert driver-guide take you to the Nyanza palace to uncover something about Rwanda culture, proceed to the city for lunch and to the craft markets for souvenir shopping before proceeding to the airport.
