The 6 days Kahuzi-Biega and Nyiragongo hike is one of the best safaris you should consider a
must to book. It combines both Eastern Lowland gorilla trekking and a hike to the
magnificent Nyiragongo Volcano (the world’s powerful volcano) in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo (DRC).


Interestingly, it also takes you to the Virunga National Park to trek the rare mountain
gorillas. Your tour to Kahuzi-Biega and Nyiragongo hike takes 5 nights, 6 days. This Congo
trip will begin and end in Kigali Rwanda.


Detailed itinerary of your 6 days Kahuzi-Biega and Nyiragongo hike


Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Goma in the DR Congo

Have the best of your hefty breakfast at a hotel or upon arrival at Kigali Airport, you will be
picked by your tour leader. Drive from Kigali via Gisenyi and Goma borders to the Virunga
National Park. Check in at Virunga Tourism Office in Gisenyi to get your gorilla trekking and
hiking permit if it was not picked previously. After, check in at your preferred lodge in the
Virunga National Park.


Day 2: Gorilla trekking in the Virunga National Park DRC

After a heavy breakfast, gather at briefing point for you to learn what gorilla trekking rules
and regulations to observe. This will be conducted by the park official who then will allocate
to you a gorilla family to track in a group of 8 trekkers. He or she will also assign your group
one experienced and armed park guide to accompany you on a search for mountain gorillas.
You are advised to come along with some packed lunch and bottled water since your trek
may last for 2-6 hours. Upon finding a gorilla family, you will be allowed only 1 hour to
interact, take photos of these humble creatures. Later, walk back to where you began your
trek and later, connect to the lodge. Have a relaxed lunch and if time or still you have
energy, expect to have a fun-filled-nature walk leading to Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage or
visit the adjacent communities at Virunga National Park.


Day 3: Hike to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano

Have a leisurely cup of tea and after, connect to Kibati Patrol Post for briefing and also to
begin your trek to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano. Ensure you have your valid hiking
permit then start your hike early after briefing on guidelines. The hike may take you close to
6 hours depending on your speed/physical fitness. At the summit, enjoy the breathtaking
views of Lava Lake and reddish molten fire as magma boils. Dine and have overnight stay at
Nyiragongo Summit Shelters.


Day 4: Descend from Nyiragongo Volcano summits to Kibati Patrol Post

Wake up early to enjoy your leisurely breakfast and later, return to Kibati Post. Lunch will be
enjoyed en-route to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a home to magnificent Eastern Lowland
gorillas. Check in at your respective accommodation for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Eastern Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega.


Enjoy your early morning breakfast and after, report to Kahuzi-Biega Park offices for briefing
on rules to follow on a trek to view Eastern Lowland gorillas. Have your valid gorilla permit
to be cleared and later, you will be assigned to a gorilla family then the park guide will lead
you on a trek to see Eastern Lowland gorillas. Return to the lodge and enjoy lunch then
after, chill. In the evening, have fun-filled community experience in the nearby local
community as you interact with local residents.


Day 6: Travel back to Kigali

Have a leisurely breakfast and after, check out of your lodge then drive back to Kigali the
capital city of Rwanda. This marks the end of your 6 days Kahuzi-Biega and Nyiragongo hike.
